Flexible x1 PCI Express 3-Way Splitter (Splitter) designed to expand modern motherboard (ATX, mini ATX etc.) with a limited number of PCI Express connectors. It allows connecting up-to three x1 PCI Express expansion boards to the x1/x4/x8/x16 motherboard PCI Express connector.

Splitter includes x1 PCI Express adapter board with Flat PCI Express cable (up-to 3 boards) and x1 PCI Express Interface board.

Each x1 PCI Express adapter board has a standard PCI Express x1 connector for plug-in x1 PCI Express expansion add-in board (downstream). x1 PCI Express Interface board connects to the x1/x4/x8/x16 motherboard PCI Express connector (upstream). Flat PCI Express cable (12 inches) is used for connection between Interface board and adapter board and provides flexible connection between PCI Express expansion boards and the motherboard.

The power (12V and 3.3V) for each x1 downstream board is supplied via female PCI Express connector placed on the PCI Express adapter board. The source of power provided to each expansion board can be taken from either x1 PCI Express Interface board via power cable, or from standard ATX power supply or from external 12 volt power supply.

x1 PCI Express adapter board has mounting holes for its mechanical fixation inside the computer chassis (embedded computer) and support tabs for mechanical stabilization of add-in PCI Express expansion board (US Patent 7,255,570).

x1 PCI Express Interface board can be retained inside chassis by using full size bracket or by using unique PCI Express add-in card retainer (Patent Pending). This PCI Express board retainer prevents Interface board from wiggling and can hold PCI Express board without bracket.
